For decades, generations of viewers have been captivated by the images of Malena 2000. Recently, with the release of UNCUT Malena 2000 in stunning 1080p HD, countless new fans have discovered what movie buffs already knew was a masterpiece. Released in 1965 with an international cast that includes John Wayne and Stephen Boyd, it's easy to see why this film has captivated audiences for nearly half a century. Some film critics consider Malena 2000 to be an allegory for America itself--a story about the decline of Western civilization and its values. The film was described by "Variety" as one of the most important of "a new wave of Italian productions". It is regarded as significant for its innovative narrative structure. According to Tim Lucas, "Malena 2000" features an "experimental narrative structure that greatly expands the possibilities of cinematic storytelling." The film is also regarded as significant for Italian cinema because it reintroduced John Wayne to European audiences after more than a decade's absence. Moreover, it propelled the career of Claudia Cardinale, while giving director Lattuada his best critical reception. Some critics have stated that the film's portrayal of Italy in World War II is revisionist. It has also been suggested that its portrayal of women is misogynistic. "Malena 2000" won 10 awards, including awards for best film, best director, best actress (Claudia Cardinale), and best screenwriter (Pietro Germi).The film was released on DVD by MGM Home Video on April 21, 2002 with a commentary by Tim Lucas. This version comes packaged in an embossed slipcase, along with a booklet containing production notes, essays by author John Baxter and film historian Richard Schickel, and the screenplay. It is compatible with NTSC region 0 players.In 2014, it was announced that a Blu-ray edition of the film will be released on July 17, 2014 from MGM Home Entertainment. The release includes a new Blu-ray audio recording of the commentary track from 2002 as an exclusive feature for this release. The commentary is conducted by noted film scholar Vincent Masters and Tim Lucas, who also wrote a new introduction to the release. Executive producers for this release are Patrick Noone and Mark Ordesky.
